no personal history of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/colorectal-cancer\/colorectal-cancer\">colorectal cancer<\/a>, noncancerous polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease; and no family or personal history of any of the various genetic disorders which make people more vulnerable to colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization says it recommends people start screening when they reach the age of 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The revised guidance also advises against screening average-risk individuals aged 45 to 49 and suggests discussing with patients the various benefits versus risks of screening in this age group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, it says that physicians can stop screening patients if they are older than 75 or have a life expectancy of 10 years or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as choosing which type of screening test to use, healthcare providers are advised to consult with their patients based on a variety of factors, including benefits versus risks, frequency of testing, availability, and cost, as well as the patient\u2019s own preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the tests that are recommended for screening are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fecal immunochemical or high-sensitivity guaiac fecal occult blood test done every 2 years,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/colonoscopy\">colonoscopy<\/a>&nbsp;every 10 years,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or a flexible&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/sigmoidoscopy\">sigmoidoscopy<\/a>&nbsp;every 10 years plus a fecal immunochemical test every 2 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it is not advised to use stool DNA, capsule endoscopy, computed tomography colonography, urine, or serum screening tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Why the ACP is making changes to their colorectal screening guidance<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healinghandsclinic.co.in\/dr-ashwin-porwal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Ashwin Porwal<\/a><em>,&nbsp;<\/em>Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Healing Hands Clinic, said the overarching reason for the updated guidance was to ensure that doctors and their patients have \u201cclear and consistent information\u201d when it comes to colorectal cancer screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed to the fact that various screening methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPatient preferences and values should be taken into account when selecting a screening approach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFurthermore,\u201d said Porwal, \u201cthe ACP recognizes that the evidence for screening is constrained by the absence of direct comparisons between methods, the diverse study populations, and the need for long-term follow-up to evaluate outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>How this is different from previous recommendations<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One important change, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/shrujal-baxi-74b621162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Shrujal Baxi<\/a>, Chief Medical Officer at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iterative.health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iterative Health<\/a>, is that screening should not begin until age 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said she found the ACP\u2019s guidance on colorectal screening for asymptomatic adults to be \u201csurprising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[T]his is at odds with the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/research\/acs-research-news\/colorectal-cancer-rates-rise-in-younger-adults.html\" target=\"_blank\">rising ratesTrusted Source<\/a>&nbsp;of colorectal cancer we\u2019ve seen in younger patients, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force\u2019s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/colorectal\/basic_info\/screening\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">recommendationTrusted Source<\/a>&nbsp;that colorectal cancer screening begin at age 45 for average-risk individuals,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baxi noted that the new guidance also provides confirmation that the ACP does not recommend DNA stool tests. These tests have grown in popularity among patients, she said.
