Kennedy Jr. has signed off on a recommendation to remove thimerosal—a mercury-based preservative—from all influenza vaccines in the United States. The move comes after a vote by the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which Kennedy reshaped earlier this year by replacing former members with new appointees more aligned with his views on vaccine safety.

“Injecting any amount of mercury into children when safe, mercury-free alternatives exist defies common sense and public health responsibility,” Kennedy said. “Today, we put safety first.”

Thimerosal is about 50 percent mercury by weight and has long stirred controversy. Although it was largely removed from most childhood vaccines in 1999, multi-dose flu vaccines have continued to use it to prevent bacterial contamination. While only about 4 to 5 percent of flu shots contained thimerosal during the most recent flu season, Kennedy argued that even minimal exposure to mercury—especially in children—warrants action.

Despite ongoing statements from the CDC that there is “no evidence of harm” from low doses of thimerosal, Kennedy’s decision reflects growing concern over cumulative exposure and the rise in allergic reactions. While the link between thimerosal and autism remains scientifically unproven, severe allergies to the compound are well-documented. Kennedy’s action is seen by supporters as long overdue and necessary, particularly in an era when mercury-free options are readily available.

Industry Response and Political Debate

The pharmaceutical industry, particularly flu vaccine manufacturers CSL Seqirus and Sanofi, downplayed the economic impact of the order. Both companies confirmed they already produce mercury-free vaccines and have sufficient supply to meet demand. “We don’t expect the ACIP recommendation to have any impact on our vaccine supply or shipment timings,” a CSL Seqirus spokesperson stated.

The Department of Health and Human Services echoed this, confirming that the Vaccines for Children program and adult vaccine supplies would remain uninterrupted. That assurance helped quiet fears that the order might disrupt flu vaccine availability ahead of the fall season.

Still, critics in the medical and public health communities have raised concerns. Dr. Cody Meissner, the lone dissenting vote on the ACIP panel, warned that eliminating multi-dose options could limit vaccine access in underserved areas. “The risk from influenza is so much greater than the nonexistent—as far as we know—risk from thimerosal,” he said.

Other experts, like Dr. Sean O’Leary of Children’s Hospital Colorado, questioned the need for the vote, suggesting that most pediatricians no longer use thimerosal-containing flu shots anyway. “I actually don’t know any pediatric practices that even use that multidose influenza vaccine,” he said.

Kennedy’s political opponents claim the move is driven more by optics and ideology than science. They point out that Kennedy’s previous leadership of Children’s Health Defense—a group critical of vaccines—raises questions about his objectivity. Some see the decision as part of a broader effort to undermine vaccine confidence.

Supporters, however, applaud Kennedy for prioritizing children’s health. “This is a brilliant move,” said Lyn Redwood, a nurse practitioner and longtime advocate for vaccine safety. “Thimerosal allergies are real, and with mercury-free vaccines available, there’s no reason to continue the risk.”

Kennedy is now urging global health agencies to follow suit. “We urge global health authorities to follow this prudent example for the protection of children worldwide,” he said.

While the science may still be debated, Kennedy’s action signals a clear direction: erring on the side of caution, especially when the health of children is involved.

HNZ Editor: Back in the day, I had contact lenses that were preserved in mercury-based thimerosal. What I didn’t know was that I had an allergic reaction to it that was causing my eyes to turn bright red. I finally found a knowledgeable doctor who recognized this, and switched me to a different preservative – immediately resolved the problem. This is real, and it is dangerous, and it is about damned time that someone removed this substance from our lives.

In a decisive shift in federal health policy, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F.
