FDA Approves Zavzpret, a New Nasal Spray to Treat Acute Migraine

The first and only approved gepant (CGRP receptor antagonist) nasal spray for acute migraine is expected to be available this summer.

A newly approved migraine treatment may be just the ticket for people whose migraine symptoms include nausea bad enough to make swallowing pills difficult.

Unlike other drugs in its class, zavegepant (Zavzpret), a CGRP receptor antagonist, or “gepant,” is delivered as a nasal spray, which means it gets absorbed quickly through the nose, bypassing the stomach altogether. And like other gepants, it has some advantages over other commonly used migraine drugs, including not causing medication-overuse headache.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved zavegepant on March 10, making it the first and only FDA-approved calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist nasal spray for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults, according to a press release from Pfizer, the manufacturer.
