Older Diabetes Medication Linked to Lower Dementia Risk

Pioglitazone belongs to an older class of diabetes drugs that aids blood sugar regulation and insulin resistance.

In a recent study, people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes who took the drug pioglitazone (Actos) to regulate their blood sugar were less likely to later develop dementia than those who did not take the drug. The effect was more significant in those with a history of stroke or ischemic heart disease, according to the findings published in the February 15 online issue of Neurology.
