COVID-19 Increases Likelihood of Heartburn, Bloating in the Next Year

New research finds that people who’ve had COVID-19 are more likely than others to experience gastrointestinal issues.

People who’ve had COVID-19 are more likely to develop gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as heartburn or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) in the year after infection compared with people who have never had COVID-19, according to a new analysis published on March 7, 2023, in Nature Communications.

“Gastrointestinal problems were among the first that were reported by the patient community,” said senior author Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, chief of research and development at the VA Saint Louis Health Care System and a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in Saint Louis, in a press release. “It is increasingly clear that the GI tract serves as a reservoir for the virus.”
