The Book At The Top Of My Nightstand Stack Right Now

Here’s a book recommendation for you all…

… it’s called “Built To Move: The 10 Essential Habits To Help You Move Free and Live Fully.”

Written by Kelly and Juliet Starrett, co-founders of The Ready State and authors of New York Times bestsellers Becoming a Supple LeopardDeskbound, and moreBuilt to Move is full of foundational wisdom for everyone from beginners to professional athletes and everyone in between.

I first had Kelly Starrett on my podcast way back in 2013 to talk about Becoming a Supple Leopard, and I still consider it to be one of my go-to book recommendations. You can listen to the podcast here: “How To Crush The Beef Jerky In Your Quads & Become A Supple Leopard” (particularly proud of that episode title, by the way). Built To Move is another fundamental and life-changing owner’s manual for your body.

The 10 Essential Habits it reveals can be easily assimilated into your day to help you move more, eat better, feel incredible, and live without pain, technology creep, sleep dysfunction, or food confusion. Each Habit includes a Test/Retest feature + a Daily Physical Practice to help you improve that area of your life.

Stop Unhealthy (& Annoying) Mouth-Breathing At Night

Mouth breathing during sleep is a leading cause of many negative consequences including:

  • Snoring (leading cause)
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Chronic stress and anxiety
  • Increased blood pressure
  • And even increased risk of divorce

Breathing through the mouth skips the natural filtration process that takes place in the nose. The nose functions to filter, moisturize, and warm the air prior to its entry into the lungs, shielding the body against detrimental particles and irritants present in the air. When you breathe through your mouth, these particles are inhaled directly, which can result in airway inflammation, blockage, and other respiratory problems. Additionally, mouth breathing may cause dryness in the mouth, leading to halitosis, and raising the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease.

Moreover, breathing through the mouth while sleeping may disturb the equilibrium between oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the body. Nasal breathing enables the body to manage these gases more efficiently, keeping them in a healthy balance. Conversely, mouth breathing forces the body to exert more effort in regulating these gases, resulting in lower oxygen levels and higher carbon dioxide levels.

In James Nestor’s book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, he shares his experience with mouth breathing and its negative effects on his health. During a 30-day experiment at Stanford University Medical Center, Nestor plugged his nose and only breathed through his mouth, leading to snoring, sleep apnea, and dangerously low blood oxygen levels.

After the experiment, Nestor researched the benefits of nose breathing and discovered the use of mouth tape as a solution to help people with mouth breathing during sleep.

Hostage Mouth Tape, based on the principles Nestor discussed in his book, is designed to keep the mouth closed during sleep and promote nose breathing, potentially preventing snoring and improving overall sleep quality. The tape’s unique adhesive formula works incredibly well with facial hair, providing a secure fit without compromising comfort, making it the ideal solution for bearded individuals like myself. It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to try it out risk-free.

Just try it, for at least a week. Mouth-taping seems like a total pain in the butt at first, but most people notice profound sleep benefits once they get used to it.
