Video: How to help a Choking Child

First Aid can be critical in a life threatening situation. If a child is choking, this are the steps to take:

Give 5 Back Blows:

  • Firmly hit the child on their back between the shoulder blades.
  • This creates vibrations and pressure in the airway, which can dislodge the object.

Give 5 Abdominal Thrusts:

  • Wrap your arms around the child’s waist.
  • Place your fist above their belly button and pull inward and upward.

Call Emergency Services (911):

  • If the object doesn’t dislodge, call for help immediately.
  • Keep repeating back blows and abdominal thrusts until:
    • The object comes out.
    • Help arrives.
    • The child becomes unresponsive.
