The bigmouth buffalo is a large freshwater fish native to North America, and it’s breaking all the rules of aging. Recent research has revealed that these fish can live more than 100 years—some as long as 112—making them the longest-living freshwater teleost fish ever recorded. But what really has scientists amazed isn’t just how long these fish live. It’s how they live: with little to no signs of aging.

Who’s Studying Them and Why It Matters

A team of researchers from North Dakota State University, the University of Auckland, and the University of Minnesota Duluth studied nearly 240 bigmouth buffalo from lakes and rivers in Minnesota. The fish ranged in age from 2 to 102 years old. The scientists were looking for typical signs of aging in three key areas: immune function, stress levels, and the length of telomeres—tiny protective caps on chromosomes that usually get shorter as animals age.

What they found was astonishing: instead of deteriorating with age, the oldest buffalo actually seemed to be doing better than the younger ones.

Signs of “Negligible Senescence”

In most animals, aging causes a drop in immune response, a rise in stress, and shortening of telomeres. But in the bigmouth buffalo, none of that held true.

  • Stress levels actually decreased with age. The researchers measured stress using a ratio called NLR (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio), which typically rises in stressed or aging animals. But in this fish, NLR dropped as they got older, suggesting they handled stress better than their younger counterparts.
  • Immune function didn’t weaken—it got stronger. The fish were better at killing harmful bacteria as they aged, a clear sign that their immune systems remained highly functional even into their tenth decade of life.
  • Telomeres stayed the same length. In humans and most other animals, telomeres get shorter as we age, eventually leading to cell malfunction and death. In bigmouth buffalo, there was no noticeable shortening of telomeres with age, meaning their cells didn’t seem to “wear out” in the usual way.

What Makes This Fish Different?

Bigmouth buffalo appear to defy the usual biological trade-offs. In most species, investing in longer life means sacrificing reproduction or growth. But these fish keep reproducing successfully well into old age. They also keep growing, get bigger with time, and face few natural predators as they age.

Because they live in calm freshwater environments and often face limited external threats, they’ve evolved to invest more in maintaining their bodies rather than rushing to reproduce. That might explain why their internal systems hold up so well.

What This Means for Humans

Scientists call this “negligible senescence”—the idea that some species don’t really show the typical signs of aging. While this concept has long been considered theoretical or limited to small creatures like turtles or mole rats, the bigmouth buffalo provides real, measurable evidence in a vertebrate animal with a backbone—just like us.

According to the researchers, understanding how these fish avoid aging could someday help us figure out how to delay or prevent age-related decline in humans. If scientists can identify the specific genes, hormones, or cellular processes that keep the buffalo’s systems young, they might be able to mimic those processes in human medicine.

As lead researcher Derek Sauer put it, “We observed many old, reproductive individuals with long telomeres, high condition values, and relatively efficient functioning stress responses and immune systems.” This opens the door to exploring new ways of tackling aging—not just as an inevitable breakdown, but as something we might eventually control.

While the findings are remarkable, scientists caution that more research is needed, especially long-term studies that follow individual fish over time. Even so, the bigmouth buffalo provides a unique and powerful model for studying how to stay healthy and strong far into old age.

As the search for anti-aging solutions continues, this unassuming freshwater fish may hold answers that modern medicine has been chasing for decades.
